With the development of modern technologies came a social norm of spending excessive amounts of time on electronic devices. These devices could transport their users to other worlds and lives through the complete immersion they enabled. As an accolade to physical reading and imagination came 'Pod'. Designed for children developing reading, writing, and creative skills, Pod embodies the aesthetic of a rocket with an interactive joystick to enable play and storage facilities at the rear of the unit. The tagline "reading time is more fun...when you can fly to the sun" works as both an accolade to the rocket theme as well as working as a catchy jingle to make the unit more prolific. This theme was important to me as I wanted to make reading fun and adventurous and the rocket is symbolic of adventure and exploration. After creating half-sized cardboard prototypes as a visual aide, I created a CAD model in creo parametric. Creo is an exceptionally helpful system as it allows you to create working drawings from anything you design within it. Pod was designed for use within shared spaces, such as school libraries or the children's sections of public libraries. Made to last, it was made with aeroply flexed over MDF and painted with acrylic. The joystick was printed from PLA and spray painted a metallic blue along with the decorative stars that pattern the front of the unit.
